Volunteer Broward Awards

Volunteer Broward Awards – Broward County Convention Center By Sherry Friedlander For the past 11 years, A Child Is Missing has participated in honoring our volunteers at Volunteer Broward (Now known as Hands On Broward). This year 65 volunteers were honored from various non-profit groups. Earleen Zarrella and Peggy Nordeen Estes were our honorees at the event. Earleen Zarrella has helped with various events and in the office. Her wit is always present and the joy she brings to others is just great. Peggy Nordeen Estes has been not only a volunteer but served on the board and advisory board for 11 years. The logo A Child Is Missing was designed by her agency – Starmark International- as various brochures, advertisements and great suggestions to make our presentations first class. Her support is valued. Such groups as Boys & Girls Clubs, Habitat for Humanity of Broward, Humane Society of Broward and others honored their volunteers.

AMIkids

AMIkids

On August 31, 2011 Congressman Allen West and his local staff visited the students at AMIkids Greater Ft. Lauderdale, at the invitation of A Child Is Missing, Inc. Congressman West addressed the students with a motivational speech that focused on choices and consequences. He shared, openly and honestly, different scenarios from his own life, in which he was required to make difficult decisions. The Congressman went on to share the intimate story of his childhood and how two individuals, from the same household and raised in the same way, lived their lives based on their own individual choices. He shared how his younger brother made several decisions which led to his being unemployed and having to struggle in life. In comparison, Congressman West went on to become Florida’s first African-American GOP Congressman in more than a century. The Congressman’s presentation, which was warmly received by the students and staff alike, was followed by a question and answer period. He was given a plaque of appreciation by A Child Is Missing, Inc.; and, he and his staff were then given a tour of the facility by AMIkids students.
