"Express Yourself!" – A Course in Communication

It has been our observation that youth, in particular high risk youth, have great difficulty in communicating their needs. As a result, they often react rather than respond to individuals and situations…sometimes violently. “Express Yourself!” was developed to provide an overview of the how and why youth are at high risk for being misunderstood, and sometimes exploited and abused, due to their inability to clearly convey what they are thinking and/or feeling. Through examination of the physical, mental, emotional and cultural aspects of communication, participants receive insight into the communication patterns they use, as well as the communication patterns used by others.

Techniques and Tools for increasing communication skills are discussed and used, so that participants can better know and understand how to communicate more effectively and more skillfully manage their lives in our fast-paced, changing world.

"The Anatomy of the Murder of a Bully" Course

It is our contention that the primary reasons why youth are at risk for being bullied, intimidated, exploited, or at the very least misunderstood, is so simple, yet complex.

First, they lack effective communication skills which can diminish the likelihood of bullying taking place. Secondly, society has taken a “soft” approach to this social issue. We deal with bullying after it occurs, rather than taking a pro-active and preventative approach.

Through the showing and examination of the History Channel documentary called Payback for a Bully, an actual account of the 1993 murder of an alleged bully in Broward County, Florida, the participants will observe and experience bullying which results in violence carried to the extreme. They will be asked to role play or “get into the head” of each of the “Broward Seven” (Murders), as well as Bobby Kent (Alleged Bully), making different choices than those that were portrayed in the documentary…choices which will lead to different consequences or outcomes.

Through examination of the physical, psychological and social aspects of communication, participants will receive insight into the communication patterns they use, as well as the communication patterns used by others.

Techniques and Tools for increasing communication skills and for skillfully managing their lives, specifically in potentially dangerous or disruptive situations such as bullying, will be incorporated into each session of this ten-part course.

We must help youth examine and understand how the choices they make today and the consequences that follow will have bearing on their adult lives. Through this course we hope to establish meaningful communication patterns for them to use in developing and sustaining positive relationships and productive lives.
