Shenandoah County, Virginia Sheriff’s Office Friday, August 15, 2014, Deputy M. Johnson called A Child Is Missing to activate The Alert. A 69 year old man suffering from Alzheimer’s was missing from his home in Broadway. The area around the man’s home is very rural and was described as ‘living on top of a mountain.” A Child Is Missing placed over 100 telephone alert calls to the area which resulted in a tip from a resident that gave the man’s direction of travel. This information assisted deputies in locating the man later that night about 3 miles away.

Shenandoah County, Virginia Sheriff’s Office “The assistance of your agency services were very appreciated. It notified surrounding citizens which allowed one to see the missing child walking in a direction. That allowed us to get a unit in the area which located the child,” wrote Captain Dellinger. He activated A Child Is Missing Alert on Thursday, September 12, 2013 when a 16 year old boy possibly in need of medical attention went missing from his home in Edinburg. Nearly 700 telephone alert calls were sent to the area which assisted deputies in locating the boy safe about a half mile away.

Front Royal Virginia Police Department (Warren County) “Received several phone calls. Could not have found the child without your assistance.” This was written by the Front Royal Police Department after Officer Lawson activated A Child Is Missing Alert on December 3, 2012. The child was a 9 year old boy that had gone missing from his residence. Over 1,000 telephone alert calls were sent to residents and businesses around the boy’s home, asking anyone with information to call Police. Tips from the alert calls helped Police locate the boy safe about 1.5 miles away.

Prince William County, Virginia Police Department (Prince William County) “Located less than 10 minutes after call was made to your service,” wrote Officer Perok. This after an 18 year old young man with autism went missing from his home in Nokesville on November 7, 2012. Nearly 1,100 telephone alert calls were sent to the region surrounding his home asking residents to be on the lookout and to contact Police with any information on his whereabouts. A resident in the calling area returned home and listened to the alert on his answering service. He checked the area, located the young man unharmed on his property and notified Police, bringing the search to an end.

Floyd County, Virginia Sheriff’s Office When a 14 year old boy was reported missing from his home in Meadows of Dan on April 18 2012, Officer Bryce responded to lead the search. Dispatcher Tammy activated A Child Is Missing Alert to assist and 200 telephone alert calls were sent to residents and businesses in the area asking anyone with information to contact Police. In response, a tip was received that enabled deputies to locate the boy the next evening at a residence approximately 5 miles away from his home.

Frederick County, Virginia Sheriff’s Office It was growing dark in Fredericks County Virginia on March 10, 2012 when the Sheriff’s Office received a call that two 6 year old boys were missing in Stephens City. The boys were thought to have run away because their best friend had just moved. Sergeant Kittoe responded to the home where the boys were last seen and Dispatcher Cathy Dunn activated A Child Is Missing to assist the officers at the scene. More than 1,100 telephone alert calls were sent to residents and businesses in the area. In response, a tip came in from a resident that had seen the two boys at a nearby playground. Deputies responded and located the children safe, approximately 1 mile away from where they had gone missing.

Prince William County, Virginia Sheriff’s Office The morning of Tuesday, January 24, 2012, PIO Jonathan Perok activated A Child Is Missing Alert to assist his agency in their search for a missing 13 year old girl. He provided a physical description of the girl to be distributed via telephone alert to areas surrounding the girl’s home and a friend’s home where the girl had been spotted. More than 1,500 calls were sent, asking anyone with information on her whereabouts to contact the Sheriff’s Office. In response a caller reported that they had seen a girl matching her description walking out of a wooded area nearby. Police responded and located the girl, safe.

Frederick County, Virginia Sheriff’s Office Sunday, October 2, 2011, an 18 year old girl left home to go backpacking and did not return. Authorities were concerned because of a suspicious man that had been seen recently where the girl works. Dispatcher Brannon contacted A Child Is Missing to assist Sergeant Kittoe at the scene and nearly 800 telephone alert calls went out to the community where the girl was last seen. In response, several volunteers came out to assist in the search and one tip came in from a resident that had received the alert. The caller reported seeing a truck in the area the morning of the disappearance. Police were then able to find the truck and locate the missing girl, safe, approximately 250 miles from where she was last seen.

Prince William County, Virginia Police Department The morning of Thursday, July 14, 2011, a family in Woodbridge called Police to report their 9 year old daughter missing. The girl had not been seen since the previous evening and concern for her safety was growing. Officer Perok contacted A Child Is Missing and over 1,600 telephone alert calls were sent to homes and businesses, giving the girl’s description and asking anyone with information to call the Sheriff’s Office. Within minutes of the alert going out, information came in that enabled deputies to locate the girl safe, less than one mile from her home. Unbeknownst to the family, the girl had been with a friend.

Madison County, Virginia Sheriff’s Office Thursday, June 23, 2011, a 16 year old boy went missing from Brightwood and Dispatcher Gordon activated A Child Is Missing Alert to assist. Over 200 alert calls giving the boy’s name and description were placed to the rural area, asking anyone with information to contact Police. In response, 2 phone calls with information were received, enabling Police to locate the boy safe, 45 miles away from where he went missing.

Henry County, Virginia Sheriff’s Office The afternoon of Monday, May 9, 2011, a 55 year old mentally disabled man in the city of Martinsville was reported missing by his caretakers in a group home. Lieutenant Walker contacted A Child Is Missing and requested assistance for his agency. Nearly 500 telephone alert calls were placed covering a six mile radius, giving the man’s description and asking anyone with information to contact the Sheriff’s Office. Approximately 30 minutes later, a woman that received the alert spotted a man matching the description crossing the street, approximately one mile from where he had gone missing. She called Police and the man was returned home, safe.

Frederick County, Virginia Sheriff’s Office The afternoon of Monday, April 18, 2011, a 4 year old boy with autism was reported missing from a 66-acre property in Winchester. There was a large pond on the property which heightened concern. A Child Is Missing was contacted by The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office with a description of the boy and the area and approximately 350 calls were placed within a 3 mile radius. The alert calls asked citizens to be aware of the boy’s absence and to search their own properties. A neighbor, having received the alert call, went outside to search and found the boy in a cow field unharmed. Total time from activation to safe recovery was 20 minutes.

New Market, Virginia (Shenandoah County) Police Department Tuesday, November 30, 2010, a 13 year old boy was reported missing by his parents when he did not come home from school. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that although he left the house early that morning he did not show up at school. Chief Peery contacted A Child Is Missing to augment his agency’s search and more than 700 alert calls were placed surrounding the boy’s home where he had last been seen. In response, 3 calls with information were received. According to Chief Peery, “The first call came in approximately 10 minutes after broadcast, the second about 12 minutes later- both were of sightings earlier that day. The last was approximately 45 minutes before he was located. The calls gave us a direction of travel.” Ultimately, the boy was located safe, approximately three quarters of a mile from his home.

Woodstock, Virginia (Shenandoah County) Police Department A 14 year old “subject was located within five minutes of [A Child Is Missing] starting calls,” said Woodstock, Virginia Police Lieutenant Jeff Coffelt after his agency activated the Alert Program to assist the search for a boy who had gone missing on August 23, 2009. The boy had last been seen on Wadewood Court in Woodstock at 8:00pm that day and Police quickly called A Child Is Missing. More than 3,100 alert calls were placed and one call received by Police resulted in the boy being safely located on South Main Street in Woodstock—approximately one mile from where he had last been seen.

Strasburg, Virginia (Shenandoah County) Police Department When an 84 year old woman, weighing 98 pounds, showed up at a residence in Virginia disoriented and thinking she was visiting from New York, Strasburg Police were called. The woman was suffering from Alzheimer’s and Strasburg Police Officer C.P. Adams ensured A Child Is Missing was used to locate the woman’s family. Shortly after 12:00 noon on June 25, 2009, A Child Is Missing mapped the area surrounding the 400 block of King Street in Strasburg and placed nearly 500 alert calls. One of those calls was received by a woman who knew the person in question and she provided information to Strasburg Police.

Madison County, Virginia Sheriff’s Office A dispatcher for the Madison County, Virginia Sheriff’s Office activated the Alert Program of A Child Is Missing when that agency was searching for a 12 year old boy on May 21, 2009. The boy had last been seen at approximately 4:30 that afternoon in the 1400 block of Wilderness Road in Brightwood, Virginia. Less than 1,400 alert phone calls were placed to the area surrounding that address which generated 38 calls from the public with information. Fielding these calls, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office was able to safely locate the boy approximately two miles from where he was last seen.

Officer Ron Anderson of the Pulaski, Virginia Police Department called A Child Is Missing to activate the Alert Program regarding a missing 15 year old boy. He had gone missing on September 6, 2008 and Officer Anderson activated the Alert Program the morning of September 7th. A Child Is Missing placed 2,700 alert calls to the area surrounding the 100 block of 12th Street Northwest in Pulaski where the boy had last been seen. Four calls were received by Pulaski Police in response to the alert calls. On one of those calls the “caller reported that she had seen the child in the area near his home,” Officer Anderson said. “I responded to the child’s residence and located him there,” Anderson said.

A 52 year old man in need of medical assistance went missing from the 300 block of South Summit Avenue in Woodstock, Virginia on July 1, 2008 at 3:15pm. Woodstock Police Officer Scott Thompson activated the A Child Is Missing Alert Program a short time later—resulting in four waves of alerts totaling nearly 10,000 calls. Approximately 50 alert citizens called Woodstock Police with information. Among these calls was one person who pinpointed the location of the man.

New Kent County, VA Sheriff’s Office A 12 year old who had never gone missing before, went missing on the night of Monday, April 7, 2008 in New Kent, Virginia. Police received the information late and called the A Child Is Missing Alert Program the following afternoon. The boy had last been seen in the 10,000 block of Old Quarter Lane in New Kent. Due to the makeup of the area, A Child Is Missing launched only 168 alert calls. Despite this small number, one of the recipients of an alert call saw the boy and called the Sheriff’s Office. Though missing for nearly 18 hours, the boy was located less than two hours after the alert calls were launched.

Strasburg, VA (Shenandoah County) - When a 13 year old boy was last seen at 6:30pm on November 1, 2007 in the 100 block of North Eberly Street in Strasburg, Virginia, the Strasburg Police Department called A Child Is Missing for assistance. After taking the necessary information from Officer Lutz, the Recovery Specialist launched more than 7,000 alert phone calls to the area police were searching—this after an already exhaustive law enforcement search. Ultimately the boy was found safe after residents of the address at which he was located called the number provided in the alert message.

Covington, VA (Alleghany) - On the morning of May 31, 2007 the Alleghany County, Virginia Sheriff’s Office activated the A Child Is Missing Alert Program for the first time when a 35 year old disabled man in need of medication had gone missing. Within two-and-a-half hours, the man had been located unharmed as a result of information provided to the Sheriff’s Office in response to one of the alert calls that had been phoned to the community by A Child Is Missing. As is the case so often when the Alert Program is activated by an agency for the first time, dispatchers and deputies alike were impressed with the swiftness of the program and its ability to generate numerous calls from concerned, alert citizens wanting to help.

Mount Jackson, VA (Shenandoah County) – On April 15, 2007 at approximately 5:48 PM, Shenandoah Sheriff’s Department contacted A Child Is Missing for assistance with 2 missing children, ages 12 and 17. The ACIM Technician on-call obtained a complete description of the 2 missing boys and within minutes over 740 and phones began ringing in the neighborhood. The Shenandoah Sheriff’s Department received many calls from residents. Deputy Sheriff Shelton stated “One caller who had picked up the missing children and transported them to Strasburg received the alert call on his cell phone and called police.” The children were found safe at approximately 6:48 PM.

Strasburg, VA (Shenandoah County) – The Strasburg Police Department contacted A Child is Missing on April 1, 2007 for assistance in locating the parents or guardians of a 4 year old boy. The ACIM Technician obtained all pertinent information and placed roughly 1000 calls out to the community. Chief Tim Sutherly stated, “We recovered the child and could not locate the parents. We found the parents within 10 minutes of initiating the alert.”
